We are currently experiencing an unprecedented nationwide baby formula shortage. Stock on store shelves is sparse and online orders are taking weeks or more with “out of stock” messages and waitlists.
News this week indicates that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will step in and allow production at the Abbott plant that was shut down, but stock from this will take months.
We know this is very distressing for parents, and we have some information regarding the safest practices for baby formula and alternatives.
Dos
- You can switch brands as long as it is a similar formula. Store brands such as Kirkland, Target, Earth’s Best, Happy Baby, and Gerber are all fine!
- You can buy small quantities and not hoard large amounts, creating issues for others.
- You can transition your child to regular whole cow’s milk if he/she is at least 11 months old.
Don’ts
- Never water down formula.
- Homemade formula is not recommended.
- Toddler formulas are not good for babies under the age of 12 months.
- The FDA does not approve buying formula from other countries. It is not considered safe.
