Recycle Your Contact Lens Waste Today!

Contact lens waste presents a serious and growing environmental challenge. Most contact lens waste is improperly disposed of and ends up flushed in drains, like toilets and sinks, or filtered out with standard recycling to end up in landfills. To put the environmental impact in perspective:

  • Up to 3 billion contacts are flushed in drains and collected in wastewater treatment plants each year, becoming microplastics in our waterways that can harm marine life and enter the human food supply.
  • The end-to-end trail of contact lens waste generated annually in the US. that ends up in landfills could circle the earth 3x over

Help Us Reach Our Goal

Since Atrius Health joined the ONE by ONE Contact Lens Recycling Program in August 2022, we have recycled close to 350 pounds of contact lens waste with the help of our patients and staff. We want to challenge our Atrius Health community to help us collect 700 pounds of contact lens waste by the end of 2023 for proper recycling.

Participation is free and quite easy. Simply collect your blister packs, top foils, and contact lenses at home and drop them off at any of our Atrius Health optical shops when ready to recycle. You do not need to clean the waste before dropping it off or worry about separating or sorting the materials. Please note that cardboard boxes are recyclable through regular municipal recycling, so do not include them in your drop-off.
